J Sainsbury plc consists of Sainsbury's – a chain of 502 supermarkets and 290 convenience stores – and Sainsbury's Bank. Sainsbury's Supermarkets are the UK's longest standing major food retailing chain, having opened its first store in 1869. The Sainsbury's brand is built upon a heritage of providing customers with healthy, safe, fresh and tasty food. Today Sainsbury's differentiates itself by offering a broad range of quality products at fair prices with particular emphasis on fresh food, a strong ethical approach to business and continuous leadership and innovation. Sainsbury's products are improved and developed to ensure the company leads in terms of the ingredients used and integrity of sourcing. A large Sainsbury's store offers around 30,000 products and an increasing number of stores also offer complementary non-food products and services. 165 stores also operate an internet-based home delivery shopping service. Official Sainsbury's website: www.sainsburys.co.uk Channel 4 - I'm running Sainsbury'sSainsbury’s makes £30,000 a minute - but like us all, the credit crunch is hitting them where it hurts. So have Sainsbury’s called in the experts? No - Sainsbury’s have asked their shop floor workers to turn things around… Sainsbury’s is Britain’s oldest supermarket chain. Once a single family-run shop, the company now cashes £30,000 a minute in 800 Sainsbury’s stores across the UK. Although Sainsbury’s is a retail giant, the onset of credit crunch Britain has seen customers become more selective about where they do their shopping and how much they spend – the company is facing one of the most competitive climates in living memory. Sainsbury’s Chief Executive, Justin King, has come up with a plan. He believes that somewhere on the shop floor, among the shelf stackers, cleaners, trolley pushers and checkout workers, may lie the next big idea that will give the Sainsbury’s supermarket the edge. So he’s decided to allow four Sainsbury’s shop floor workers the opportunity to try and roll their ideas out across the business, or take up a position of power where they can endeavour to make a difference to the business. Cameras will be following every challenge, obstacle and success along the way. Will they be able to handle the responsibilities and stresses of taking a new product or concept to the top? Will their ideas actually work? And has Justin hit on an innovative new concept, or is he just unleashing chaos on Sainsbury’s? |
